Lecture 1: Avoiding Surgical Complications in Otological Surgeries

Ashkan Monfared
Professor of Surgery and Neurosurgery
Ashkan Monfared, MD is professor of Surgery and Neurosurgery at the George Washington School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He was recruited from Stanford University over ten years ago to serve as the Director of Otology, Neurotology, and Skullbase Surgery. Dr. Monfared completed his medical training, residency and fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. He has had the distinct honor of serving at the Veteran Administration Hospital and the Walter Reed National Medical Center. As a researcher in the areas of acoustic neuromas, he has authored several peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. He is the principal investigator of a multi-center prospective study on large acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) known as Acoustic Neuroma Subtotal Resection Study (ANSRS). His current research interests beside acoustic neuromas include otologic simulators, hearing loss due to sickle cell anemia, intracranial hypertension, and resident education. Dr. Monfared established the GW Comprehensive Hearing Center, which is one of the only adult cochlear implant programs in the Metro DC area. Since 2004 Dr. Monfared has been active in international humanitarian medical missions. He is on the board of directors of Global ENT Outreach, a non-profit humanitarian organization providing assistance and education with otologic surgeries in many developing countries. He has served in Ethiopia, El Salvador, Belize, Peru, and the American Samoa. Dr. Monfared is a trained classical pianist and fluent in Persian.

Diab Khassan Mohamad Ali was born in 1973. In 1990 he graduated the school college Notre Dame de Paris in Lebanon. In 1999 he graduated from the medical care faculty of Rostov State Medical University. From 1999 till 2003 he studied as a resident on the ENT department of the same university and in St. Petersburg research Institute of Ear, Nose, Throat and Speech. After finishing the residency in 2003 Khassan Diab was admitted to the 2-year fellowship from which he graduated having passed a PhD thesis defense on the topic «Unsatisfactory results of stapedoplasty and ways of their correction».

Dr Ahmad Alamadi graduated from Glasgow medical school in United Kingdom in 1993 he completed his training in Scotland by obtaining his Fellowship of royal college of surgeons of Glasgow in 1998. He followed his higher surgical training by doing a clinical neurotology fellowship program in Toronto University in Canada. Dr Alamadi is currently a consultant Otologist and Neurotologist and medical director at Al Baraha hospital in Dubai he is also a clinical Associate Professor at Sharjah University. His expertise lies in Otological surgeries and management of dizzy patients.

Dr Asad Qayyum is working as a consultant ENT Surgeon practicing in the Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom. He has a specialist interest in Otology, Balance and Paediatric ENT problems. Mr Asad is Clinical Director for the Head and Neck Services and also the Training Program Director for the ENT Trainees in the Cambridgeshire region. Asad has been the International Otology Fellow at the Royal Darwin Hospital in Australia and completed a second fellowship in Otology and Ear Implant Unit at the Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. Asad has been involved with the research of Genetics of Early onset hearing loss at the Sanger Genome Institute at Cambridge. His current research interest involves managing prevention of retraction pockets of tympanic membrane using a combination of endoscopic approach and Eustachian tuboplasty. Asad is also a course director for cadaveric ENT, Head and Neck courses, that he has set up in collaboration with the Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom. Asad has extensive Otological experience in Endoscopic Ear Surgery, Cholesteatoma Surgery, Stapes Surgery and managing patients with vertigo and balance problems both in adult and paediatric population. Asad has more than 70 publications including text book chapters to his name. He has presented his work in South Africa, Switzerland, China, USA and the UK. Outside of work he is passionate about photography and restoring classic cars.

Mohamad A. Bitar, MD, FACS is a Consultant ENT Surgeon and Chief of Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery at Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital, Dubai, UAE. Dr Bitar did his training at both the American University of Beirut and the George Washington University and its Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of several international specialty societies, including ASPO, AAP and SENTAC. Dr Bitar established the Section of Pediatric Otolaryngology at the American University of Beirut, which he leaded between 2002 and 2015. He then joined the staff of the Department of ENT Surgery at the Children Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, Australia (2013 & 2014). Dr Bitar has been involved in teaching and research in the field of Pediatric Otolaryngology (currently Adjunct Professor with MBRU, Dubai) and has published many articles pertinent to his field. He has also participated in several national, regional and international meetings and workshops.

From 1999 till 2003 he studied as a resident on the ENT department of the same university and in St. Petersburg research Institute of Ear, Nose, Throat and Speech. Professor Abdulrahman Abdullah Hagr received his bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1996. Completed his postgraduate studies in Otolaryngology from McGill University, Canada, in 2004 and Otology and Neurotology from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, in 2005. He holds the following certificates: MBBS, Saudi Council Examination, Internship, MCCEE, King Medal for Merit, Principles of Surgery, Royal College of Canada, and Dalhousie University Otology Fellowship. A professor and consultant at King Saud University, consultant at the Ministry of Health for National Neonatal Screening Program, consultant at Al Habib Medical Center- otology-neurotology and a skull base surgeon. Professor Hagr is the founder and advisor of the Cochlear Implant Programs in Saudi Arabia. He is also the founder of the Otology Neurotology Fellowship Program at king Saud University, founder of the largest cochlear implant program in Middle East, the founder of the first Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA), Hybrid CI, ABI, ABCI, Vistafix, Vibroplasty and Bonebridge programs in Saudi Arabia. He is currently the director of the following: King Abdullah Ear Specialist Center, at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, King Saud University, Director of the National Saudi Neonatal Screening Program, Prince Sultan Research Chair for Hearing Disabilities (RCHD). President of the Saudi ORL Society and a member of King Saud University Counseling Board for Scientific Studies. Ashkan Monfared, MD is professor of Surgery and Neurosurgery at the George Washington School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He was recruited from Stanford University over ten years ago to serve as the Director of Otology, Neurotology, and Skullbase Surgery. Dr. Monfared completed his medical training, residency and fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. He has had the distinct honor of serving at the Veteran Administration Hospital and the Walter Reed National Medical Center. As a researcher in the areas of acoustic neuromas, he has authored several peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. He is the principal investigator of a multi-center prospective study on large acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) known as Acoustic Neuroma Subtotal Resection Study (ANSRS). His current research interests beside acoustic neuromas include otologic simulators, hearing loss due to sickle cell anemia, intracranial hypertension, and resident education. Dr. Monfared established the GW Comprehensive Hearing Center, which is one of the only adult cochlear implant programs in the Metro DC area. Since 2004 Dr. Monfared has been active in international humanitarian medical missions. He is on the board of directors of Global ENT Outreach, a non-profit humanitarian organization providing assistance and education with otologic surgeries in many developing countries. He has served in Ethiopia, El Salvador, Belize, Peru, and the American Samoa. Dr. Monfared is a trained classical pianist and fluent in Persian.

Diab Khassan Mohamad Ali was born in 1973. In 1990 he graduated the school college Notre Dame de Paris in Lebanon. In 1999 he graduated from the medical care faculty of Rostov State Medical University. From 1999 till 2003 he studied as a resident on the ENT department of the same university and in St. Petersburg research Institute of Ear, Nose, Throat and Speech. After finishing the residency in 2003 Khassan Diab was admitted to the 2-year fellowship from which he graduated having passed a PhD thesis defense on the topic «Unsatisfactory results of stapedoplasty and ways of their correction».

Firas Alzoubi, MD, FRCS, is a Senior Consultant and Professor of Otolaryngology, School of Medicine of Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) and the director of the Cochlear Implant and Hearing Solutions Centre of King Abdullah University Hospital and member of the steering committee of his royal highness the crown prince initiative “Hearing without Borders”. He was graduated from the school of medicine at JUST in 1993 and get his Otolaryngology training in Jordan and then in Manchester, UK where he was awarded the fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1999. He was appointed as the head of ENT division, the Head of Special surgery department at the school of Medicine for more than 10 years followed by being the vice dean for the clinical specialties. Prof. Alzoubi is a leading otologist and CI surgeon who is heavily involved with training, research and establishing state of the art CI centers all over the region. He published more than 43 articles in well-respected international journals with 1014 citations.

Professor Abdulrahman Abdullah Hagr received his bachelor degree in Medicine and Surgery at King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in 1996. Completed his postgraduate studies in Otolaryngology from McGill University, Canada, in 2004 and Otology and Neurotology from Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada, in 2005. He holds the following certificates: MBBS, Saudi Council Examination, Internship, MCCEE, King Medal for Merit, Principles of Surgery, Royal College of Canada, and Dalhousie University Otology Fellowship. A professor and consultant at King Saud University, consultant at the Ministry of Health for National Neonatal Screening Program, consultant at Al Habib Medical Center- otology-neurotology and a skull base surgeon. Professor Hagr is the founder and advisor of the Cochlear Implant Programs in Saudi Arabia. He is also the founder of the Otology Neurotology Fellowship Program at king Saud University, founder of the largest cochlear implant program in Middle East, the founder of the first Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA), Hybrid CI, ABI, ABCI, Vistafix, Vibroplasty and Bonebridge programs in Saudi Arabia. He is currently the director of the following: King Abdullah Ear Specialist Center, at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, King Saud University, Director of the National Saudi Neonatal Screening Program, Prince Sultan Research Chair for Hearing Disabilities (RCHD). President of the Saudi ORL Society and a member of King Saud University Counseling Board for Scientific Studies. Professor Hagr is the Goodwill Ambassador of American Academy of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. He is the Chairman of International Arab Cochlear Conference (ACIC). He has made numerous conference presentations worldwide and an author of eight books and more than thirty-five scientific articles.

Ashkan Monfared, MD is professor of Surgery and Neurosurgery at the George Washington School of Medicine & Health Sciences. He was recruited from Stanford University over ten years ago to serve as the Director of Otology, Neurotology, and Skullbase Surgery. Dr. Monfared completed his medical training, residency and fellowship at Stanford University Medical Center. He has had the distinct honor of serving at the Veteran Administration Hospital and the Walter Reed National Medical Center. As a researcher in the areas of acoustic neuromas, he has authored several peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters. He is the principal investigator of a multi-center prospective study on large acoustic neuromas (vestibular schwannomas) known as Acoustic Neuroma Subtotal Resection Study (ANSRS). His current research interests beside acoustic neuromas include otologic simulators, hearing loss due to sickle cell anemia, intracranial hypertension, and resident education. Dr. Monfared established the GW Comprehensive Hearing Center, which is one of the only adult cochlear implant programs in the Metro DC area. Since 2004 Dr. Monfared has been active in international humanitarian medical missions. He is on the board of directors of Global ENT Outreach, a non-profit humanitarian organization providing assistance and education with otologic surgeries in many developing countries. He has served in Ethiopia, El Salvador, Belize, Peru, and the American Samoa. Dr. Monfared is a trained classical pianist and fluent in Persian.
